Smith Abrasives 50090 - Edge Pro Pull-Thru Knife Sharpener
Model: SM50090

Designed for the Sports Enthusiast who demands the highest quality sharpening tools and abrasives, the Edge Pro Pull-Thru Knife sharpener delivers a level of sharpening performance unmatched by standard edge care products. This sharpener offers two stages of sharpening for all types of knives, everything from everyday pocket knives to the finest customer sport knives. The precision ground carbides remove metal in a smoother, more consistent fashion when setting the edge on very dull straight edge blades, and the specially shaped ceramic stones can be used to lightly hone either STRAIGHT or SERRATED edge blades. It has an ergonomically designed soft grip handle and non-slip rubber feet for comfort and safety.

Product Features

Features:

  • Two stages of sharpening - Coarse & Fine
  • Sharpens standard and serrated edge knife blades
  • Premium abrasives for sharper, longer lasting cutting edge
  • Precision ground carbides for quick edge setting
  • Specially-shaped ceramic stones for sharpening standard or serrated edge blades
  • Extra-Fine ceramic stones for final edge honing

  • Non-slip rubber base for secure and stable sharpening
  • Reversible and replaceable abrasive components

Product Instructions

Caution: Always rest your sharpener on a sturdy, flat surface and use the handle of the sharpener for stability and control during sharpening.

Place the Edge-Pro Pull-Thru Knife Sharpener on a flat, sturdy surface. Hold the handle of the sharpener with one hand and the knife with the other hand.

Select the appropriate sharpening slot to use. COARSE = quick, aggressive removal of metal. Use for quick edge setting of very dull or damaged blades. Usually, 4 to 5 strokes is all it takes, but knives made of very hard steel may take additional strokes. FINE = removes very little metal. Use for final edge honing and polishing or to touch up an already sharp blade. Usually, 8 to 10 strokes is all it takes, but knives made of very hard steel may take additional strokes. Note: A reasonably sharp blade may only require light honing in the Extra Fine sharpening slot. The Fine sharpening slot is intended for dull blades that require more maintenance.

Insert knife blade into the preferred sharpening slot at a 90-degree angle to the sharpener. Tilt the tip of the knife blade down just slightly.
Press down with light to moderate pressure and pull the knife blade through the sharpening slot from the heel to tip (never back and forth).
Repeat this action until blade is sharp. If you started the sharpening process in the COARSE slot, move to the FINE slot for final edge honing. Always finish the sharpening process in the FINE slot.

Reversible & Replaceable Carbide Blades and Ceramic Stones - When the carbide blades and/or ceramic stones stop removing metal from the knife blade, they can be rotated for use on the other side or replaced. To rotate or replace, remove the two screws and the plastic cover. Remove the stones and rotate 180 degrees. Reverse positions by placing the front ceramic stone into the back slot, and the back ceramic stone into the front slot. Replace the cover and screws. If replacing, add new blades or stones then replace the cover and screws.

Care & Storage: Always clean your sharpener after use. Clean with a damp cloth or mild brush. Do not rinse with water. Store in a drawer or cabinet.

Product Instructions

Knife Sharpening Instructions

NOTE: These instructions only apply to straight edge knives with a flat grind on both sides of the blade. This sharpener is not intended for use in sharpening serrated edge blades or blades with a flat grind on just one side of the blade.

NOTE: A reasonably sharp blade may only require light honing in the FINE ceramic slot. The COARSE carbide blades in the head of the sharpener are intended for very dull or damaged edges that require a new sharp edge to be put on the blade or for initial edge setting the first time you sharpen you knife with this sharpener.

Carbide Blades - COARSE
1. Place your knife on a flat surface with the cutting edge facing up and allow about 1" of the blade to extend past the edge of the surface. Secure the knife with downward pressure on the handle.

2. Place the sharpening slot in the head of the sharpener over the cutting edge at an approximate 45 degree angle to the blade near the handle of your knife.

3. Pull sharpener over cutting edge from heel to tip while applying moderate, downward pressure. Use a smooth, consistent stroke when pulling the sharpener over the cutting edge and continue your outward motion at the end of each stroke to avoid any contact with the blade. If your blade curves out to the tip, be sure to follow the curvature of the blade all the way out to the tip to ensure sharpening of the complete cutting edge.

4. Repeat a minimum of 5 pulls. After 5 pulls, the sharpener should begin to glide smoothly over the cutting edge. If not, additional pulls are required.

NOTE: Knives made of extremely hard steel may require additional pulls over the cutting edge when sharpening your knife blade.

5. Move to the FINE ceramic slot for final edge honing.

CAUTION: Always keep your fingers inside the hand guard and your thumb securely on the thumb rest indention on the top of the sharpener or possible injury may occur.

Replaceable Carbide Blades - When the carbide blades in the head of the sharpener stop removing metal from the knife blade, they can be replaced.

Ceramic Rods - FINE
1. Place the sharpener on a flat surface and grip the handle for stability. Hold the knife comfortably in your other hand.

2. Insert knife blade fully into the sharpening slot with cutting edge of the blade resting at the bottom of the V-shaped slot and the knife straight up and down. Tilt the tip of the blade down slightly.

3. While applying light, downward pressure, pull the knife blade through the sharpening slot from heel to tip. If your blade curves up at the end, be sure to lift the handle of the knife as you approach the curved portion of the blade to sharpen all the way out to the tip of the blade.

4. Repeat a minimum of 6 - 8 pulls always sharpening from heel to tip (never back and forth). After 6 - 8 pulls, the cutting edge of the knife blade should begin to glide smoothly over the ceramic rods. If not, additional pulls are required.

NOTE: Knives made of extremely hard steel may require additional pulls through the sharpening slot when sharpening your knife blade.

5. Check the sharpness of your blade. If additional sharpening is needed, repeat process until sharp.

SCISSORS SHARPENING INSTRUCTIONS

1. With your free hand, hold the head of the sharpener and place the base of the sharpener on a flat surface. NOTE: If you are sharpening right-handed scissors/shears, the words "Right Handed" should be facing you. Opposite for left-handed.

2. Open your scissors or game shears and insert just the tips of the blades just far enough into the slot to be able to clamp down on the square rod.

3. Close scissors/shears on the sharpening rod as if you were trying to cut the rod, then push the scissors/shears through the slot while trying to keep the blades closed.

4. Repeat this action a minimum of 5 times for common household scissors and 10 times for game shears. NOTE: Scissors or Game Shears made of extremely hard steel may require additional pushes through the slot when sharpening their blades.

Caution: Always rest your sharpener on a sturdy, flat surface during scissors sharpening.

Care & Storage: Always clean your sharpener after use. Clean with a damp cloth or mild brush. Do not rinse with water. Store in a dry place under normal conditions.

  • Fine Diamond 750 Grit
  • Fine Ceramic 800 Grit
  • Coarse Carbides

Product Instructions

Sharpening Instructions:

Use water or Smith's non-petroleum based honing solution as your sharpening lubricant. Stone can be used dry. Do not use petroleum based oils as a lubricant.

  • Place your blade on the end of the stone at the desired sharpening angle.
  • Push the blade away from you just like you were trying to cut a thin slice off the top of the stone. Use moderate pressure, let the stone do the work. Repeat this pushing stroke 3 or 4 times. Try to maintain the same approximate angle with each stroke. This is the key to obtaining the sharpest edge.
  • Sharpen the other side of the blade by placing your blade across the opposite end of your stone and repeat previous steps, this time pushing the blade toward you.
  • Continue these steps until you feel your blade is truly sharp.

Carbide Instructions:

  • Place the sharpener on a flat surface and firmly hold the sharpener with your hand while keeping your fingers behind the finger guards.
  • Place the knife blade between the two cutting heads and with light downward pressure, draw the knife from the heel of the knife to the point. Raise the handle of the knife as you get near the tip of your knife to ensure maximum sharpening effectiveness.
  • Repeat this process 3 or 4 times until your knife is sharp.

Ceramic Rod Instructions:

  • Remove rods from storage area in bottom of base
  • Place sharpener on solid flat surface.
  • Select rod surface to be used; half round, flat or triangular. Insert the rods firmly into the holes in base with the same sharpening surface facing each other.
  • Put hand guard in place by removing storage lid that covers the diamond stone and insert it into the slot in the base, which is located between the end of the diamond stone and carbide slot. Caution: NEVER use the ceramic rods without the hand-guard.

Straight Edged Knives:

  • Use the half-round or flat surface of the ceramic stone for best results
  • Place your knife blade on the inside of the left rod about 1/2" from the top of the stone. Hold the knife at a 90-degree angles to the base.
  • Pull the blade down and across the ceramic rod starting from the back of the knife blade to the tip of the blade. Repeat this action for about 8-10 strokes.
  • Repeat this stroke on the inside of the right rod to sharpen the other side of your knife.
  • Repeat the above steps until your knife is sharp.

Serrated Edged Knives:

  • Use the triangular shaped edge of the ceramic stone for best results. The triangular edge will slide in and out of the serrations, even extremely small ones.
  • Place your knife blade with the serrations facing the stone on the inside of the rod about 1/2" from the top of the stone. Hold the knife at a 90-degree angle to the base.
  • Pull the blade down and across the ceramic rod starting from the back of the knife blade to the tip of the blade. Repeat this action for about 8-10 strokes.
  • Repeat this stroke on the inside of the opposite rod to sharpen the backside of your knife. This will create a new bevel on the backside of your knife, which will create a straighter cut than the original factory edge.
  • Repeat above steps until your knife is sharp.

Hooks: Place the hook in the groove and rub the point of the hook back and forth until sharp. Use diamond groove for reshaping the edge and the groove in the ceramic stone to finish the edge.

Care: Always clean your sharpener after use. Rinse with water and towel dry.
